How do heat pump water heaters save me money?

Standard water heaters heat water by converting a fuel source to heat which is then used to heat the water. This requires you to pay for all of the energy it takes to heat water, and since no standard water heater is 100% efficient, you actually pay for more energy than the water heating requires to make up for the inefficiency.

EoTech heat pump water heaters move heat energy from someplace it's not needed into the water. You only pay for the energy which is needed to move the heat - typically only 20 - 50% of the total energy - saving you up to 80% of energy costs.

A water heating heat pump operates similar to your home heat pump air conditioner, but instead of heating and cooling air, the E-Tech water heater heats (and in special situations, cools) water. A water heating heat pump is more efficient than the air conditioner because it makes use of virtually 100% of the heat absorbed, consumed and generated by the electrical consumption of the system. Nothing goes to waste with the water heating heat pump.

Since heat pumps move energy from one place to another - what happens to the source of the energy? It gets colder! The by-product of a heat pump is cool - dehumidified air (for air source units) or colder water (for water source units). E-Tech heat pump water heaters are available in two basic designs: air source or water source, depending on the supply of available heat.

Air source heat pump water heaters

WH Series

The air to water heat pump water heater works by taking unwanted heat and humidity from the air and uses it to heat potable water. As a by-product air source heat exchangers produce cool dehumidified air, which can be used for spot cooling or to assist in general space conditioning, further reducing operational costs.

WH series water heaters are ideally suited for applications where demand for hot water and space cooling occur together. This allows the beneficial use of both the water heating and space cooling capabilities of the water heater providing maximum cost savings and the shortest pay back periods. Typical applications of this type include laundries, kitchens, restaurants, hospitals, nursing homes, and many industrial processes.

Air source water heaters can also be placed outdoors, ideally in locations where ambient temperatures do not fall below 45 °F. (Operation at lower temperatures is possible, but additional components are required.) In most outdoor installations the cooling benefit is not used. Typical applications of this type include hotels, condominiums and other locations that need hot water but have no concurrent cooling load.

Standard air source machines are available in capacities from 49,000 to 424,000 btuh. Custom designs are available in capacities up to 1,600,000 btuh.

Water source heat pump water heaters

WW Series

The water to water heat pump works by moving energy between two water supplies. This process cools the water providing the energy, and heats the water receiving the energy. The water supplying the energy is typically a building chiller or cooling tower loop or an earth or ground water loop.

WW series water heaters are perfect for applications with simultaneous cooling and hot water demands, where rejected heat from operation of a chiller or air conditioner is used to heat the water. This will reduce the load on building chillers and recover heat that would otherwise have been wasted to the atmosphere.

Free hot water?

The cost of operating a water-to-water heat pump to chill the return line of a cold water circulating system (commonly used in large buildings and hotels) and preheat water is generally offset by the reduced load on the chiller. This provides essentially free hot water while the chiller is operating.

In other applications - hotels, motels, hospitals, nursing homes, retirement communities - heat recovered from the water streams of cooling tower or other water source can be used to supply energy to heat water for guest rooms, laundry, kitchens and pools.
